Many community-minded individuals want to leave a legacy of giving to benefit future generations. To make informed decisions about lasting local philanthropy, you've come to the right place.
☐ Leave a planned gift in your will
Big or small, LCF is honored to receive gifts from donors made as part of their estate planning. Unrestricted gifts give us the greatest flexibility to use the funds where they are needed most, but we are happy to work with donors with a specific purpose in mind.
Below is sample language that can be used to name LCF as a beneficiary of a specific amount, a specific asset, or as a residuary beneficiary of your will: “I give [the sum of ____________][___% of my estate] to the Lyons Community Foundation, of Lyons, Colorado, for its general charitable purposes. The Lyons Community Foundation is a fund of the Community Foundation Serving Boulder County, a tax-exempt organization under §501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, federal tax identification number 84-1171836.”
☐ Name LCF as a beneficiary
Naming LCF as a beneficiary of life insurance or a retirement plan is an easy way to leave a charitable gift at death. Just name the “Lyons Community Foundation, a fund of the Community Foundation Serving Boulder County” as one of the beneficiaries on your plan. Changes to a beneficiary designation is done through the institution that holds your account and does not require making changes to your will or other estate planning documents. In the case of IRAs and other tax-deferred retirement accounts, naming a charity is especially tax-efficient because unlike individual beneficiaries, LCF will not need to pay income tax on its gift.
☐ Create a Scholarship Fund
LCF administers several scholarship funds, often as a memorial to a beloved member of our community. If you are interested in establishing a scholarship fund as part of your own estate planning or in memory of another, please visit our Scholarships page to find out more.
☐ Give from your donor advised fund
Donor Advised Funds are like a charitable savings account. They are created as a flexible way to set aside funds for charitable giving, and obtaining an income tax deduction at that time, but reserving the ability to distribute the funds upon your recommendation in the future. Giving from your donor advised fund is simple. Just recommend a distribution to the “Lyons Community Foundation, a fund of the Community Foundation Serving Boulder County.” Our address and contact information are below.
☐ Give from your IRA
Individuals who are 70½ or older can make a gift to LCF directly from their IRA. Such a gift, called a “qualified charitable distribution,” can be made in amounts up to $100,000 and it can satisfy the account holder’s required minimum distribution for the year.
