How to apply for an LCF scholarship

Each of the following scholarships uses the Lyons Community Foundation General Scholarship Application Google Form.
​This application form is for all scholarships offered by the Lyons Community Foundation.

 ☑    ​Review scholarships list below so as to choose which ones you will apply to. Please read through carefully as each scholarship has separate criteria, restrictions and requirements.

 ☑    Complete all fields of the General Application Google Form (click on black button above). Completion of this form is the same for all Lyons Community Foundation scholarships. However, essays/personal statements and supplementary information may be different for each scholarship.

 ☑    Please be accurate in completing the financial information, if requested. Many scholarships are based on financial need. All this information will be kept confidential.

 ☑    Check the Scholarship for which you are applying and ONCE YOU COMPLETE THE GENERAL FORM, make a copy of the entire application for each. Do the same for letters, transcripts and other supporting documents.

 ☑    Assemble a hard copy packet for each scholarship application. A complete application includes, in the following order:
  • Printed application form (all fields complete)
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Additional information, according to the scholarship listing
  • Official transcript (if requested in scholarship listing)

☑   Submit applications to the Counseling Office at Lyons Senior High School by March 10, 2023 at 3:00pm MT. 
Hard copies of complete application forms and required documents may be returned to the counseling office of Lyons Senior High School, or mailed to the Lyons Community Foundation, PO Box 546, Lyons, CO 80540.

Please note: 

  • Incomplete applications will not be accepted
  • Proofread your application. Applications with excessive errors in grammar, spelling and punctuation will not be considered.
  • The scholarships may be used at any accredited post-secondary education program in the country or as otherwise noted for each scholarship.
  • Students must be accepted to or have acceptance pending at their prospective school(s) when they submit their applications

Lyons Community Foundation Scholarships
Class of 2023

Below is a list of scholarships available to high school seniors living in the greater Lyons area.  A few scholarships require that you attend Lyons Senior High School. Most scholarships are open to any graduating senior attending a different high school or home schooled from the greater Lyons area.
​Please note that the following applications are due on March 10, 2023 at 3:00pm MT to the Counseling Office at Lyons Senior High School. 


LYONS COMMUNITY FOUNDATION MISSION SCHOLARSHIP

Selection criteria:    
  • Essay
  • Application form
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Financial need (attach SAR from FAFSA to show need)
  • List of community involvement during your high school years​
Essay:  Please answer the following question in essay form: 
  • Describe how you embody the Lyons Community Foundation's mission of improving the quality of life, building a culture of giving, and encourage positive change for the greater Lyons area (One page or less)
  • What would a scholarship and/or opportunity to go to college mean to you? (One page or less)
Eligibility:    
  • Any graduating senior from Lyons Senior High School
  • A graduating senior living in the greater Lyons area (80540 zip code) attending a different high school
  • Homeschoolers may apply.
Restrictions: To be used for enrollment at an accredited two-year or four-year college / university, or trade school. 
Amount: One (1) scholarship up to $5,000
Payable: Directly to the education institution in one lump sum
Selection committee: Lyons Community Foundation Scholarship Selection Committee

LYONS COMMUNITY FOUNDATION 2-YEAR STUDY SCHOLARSHIP

Selection criteria:    
  • Essay
  • Application form
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Financial need (attach SAR from FAFSA to show need)
  • List of community involvement during your high school years​
Essay:  Please answer the following two questions in essay form: 
  • Describe how you embody the Lyons Community Foundation's mission of improving the quality of life, building a culture of giving, and encourage positive change for the greater Lyons area (One page or less)
  • What do you expect to accomplish in the future and how will higher education help you reach that goal?  What areas of study are you interested in pursuing with higher education? (One page or less)​
Eligibility:    
  • Any graduating senior from Lyons Senior High School
  • A graduating senior living in the greater Lyons area (80540 zip code) attending a different high school
  • Homeschoolers may apply.
Restrictions: To be used for enrollment at an accredited two-year college / university or trade school
Amount:  One (1) $2000 scholarship
Payable:  Directly to the educational institution in one lump sum

UNCLE LOUIS “BUD” WINKLER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Selection criteria:     
  • Essay
  • Application form
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Financial need (attach SAR from FAFSA to show need)
  • Grades transcript
  • Annotated list of your community activities, school activities, leadership roles, and work experience (include which grade you were in for everything listed)
  • Finalists may be required to participate in an interview
Essay:    Please answer the following two questions in essay form:
  •   What does the Community of Lyons mean to you? (500 words or less)
  •   What would a scholarship and/or opportunity to go to college mean to you? (One page or less)
Eligibility:    
  • Any graduating senior from Lyons Senior High School
  • A graduating senior living in the greater Lyons area (80540 zip code) attending a different high school.
  • Homeschoolers may apply.
  • At least a 3.0 GPA or equivalent.
  • Financial aid is a need. 
Restrictions: Business or Finance major at an accredited four-year education program
Amount:  One (1) $1000 scholarship
Payable:  Directly to the college / university in one lump sum

Deadline:  March 10, 2023 at 3:00pm MT


JANET ORBACK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Selection criteria:    
  • Essay
  • Application form
  • Two letters of recommendation (at least one being from a person who has served as a mentor to you in some way)
  • List of community service involvement during your high school years; 
Essay: Please answer the following two questions in essay form:
  •     Describe how you are involved with your community and how your contributions make your community            stronger. 
  •     Describe your career aspirations and what personal strengths you have that will make you successful. 
Eligibility:    
  • Any graduating senior from Lyons Senior High School.
  • At least a 2.5 GPA.
  • Lyons homeschooled students who participate in Lyons Senior High School through sports and/or academics are also eligible. 
Restrictions: Preference will be given to a student who will be attending any of the following: trade school, workshop, technical training, vocational training, or apprentice program.
Amount: One (1)  scholarship up to $5,000
Payable:  Directly to the educational institution in one lump sum

GERALD BOLAND MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Selection criteria:     
  • Essay
  • Application form
  • Two letters of recommendation (one from Lyons Senior High School, one from the community)
  •  Grades transcript
  •  Annotated list of your community activities, school activities, leadership roles, and work experience (include which grade you were in for everything listed)
  • Finalists may be required to participate in an interview
Essay:  Please answer the following two questions in essay form:
  •     What does the Community of Lyons mean to you? (500 words or less)
  •     What would a scholarship and/or opportunity to go to college mean to you? (One page or less)
Eligibility:    
  • Any graduating senior from Lyons Senior High School
  • At least a 3.0 GPA. 
Restrictions:    
  • To be used for enrollment at an accredited two-year or four-year education program.
  • Students should share in Gerald Boland’s passion for the outdoors, particularly educating the youth of Lyons.
Amount: One (1) $1000 scholarship
Payable: Directly to the educational institution in one lump sum
Selection committee: Family of Gerald Boland, Lyons Community Foundation Scholarship Selection Committee

Deadline:  March 10, 2023 at 3:00pm MT


LYONS COMMUNITY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP IN MEMORY OF STEVE RALSTON

Selection criteria:
  • Essay
  • Application form
  • Two letters of recommendation (at least one from the community)
  • Annotated list of your community activities, school activities, leadership roles, and work experience (include which grade you were in for everything listed)
  • Grades transcripts are not required but may be requested by the committee at a later date if necessary to make a final decision on a candidate
Essay:    Please answer the following question in essay form:
  •  How have you used your interests, skills, and/or passions to connect with your community and your goals for the future? (500 words or less)
Eligibility:    
  • Any graduating senior from Lyons Senior High School
  • A graduating senior living in the greater Lyons area (80540 zip code) attending a different high school.
  • Homeschoolers may apply.
Restrictions:    
  • To be used for enrollment at an accredited post secondary education program.
  • Preference will be given to a student who best expresses their passion for learning and sharing one’s interests, skills, and joyful life experiences with their community.
Amount:  One (1) scholarship up to $5,000
Payable:  Directly to the educational institution in one lump sum

CEMEX ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP SCHOLARSHIP

Selection criteria:    
  • Essay
  • Application form
  • School transcript
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Financial need (attach SAR from FAFSA to show need)
  • List of community involvement during your high school years
Essay:  Please answer the following two questions in essay form:
  • What does natural resources stewardship mean to you and how have you contributed to help your community?
  • Explain ways your field of study will help promote sustainable practices.
Eligibility:    
  • Field of Study must be in Natural resources, engineering, wildlife biology, geology
  • Minimum 3.5 GPA required
  • Any graduating senior from Lyons Senior High School
Restrictions: To be used for enrollment at an accredited four-year college / university, or trade school. 
Amount: One (1) $1,000 scholarship
Payable: Directly to the education institution in one lump sum
Selection committee: Cemex, Lyons Community Foundation Scholarship Selection Committee

LYONS GARDEN CLUB SCHOLARSHIP
Selection criteria:    
  • Essay
  • School transcript
  • Application form
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Financial need (attach SAR from FAFSA to show need)
  • List of community involvement during your high school years
Essay:  Please answer the following question in essay form: 
  • Why are you pursuing a career in horticulture (or a related field)?
Eligibility:    
  • Field of study must be in Horticulture, Agriculture, Landscaping, Botany, Plant Ecology, Forestry, Plant Pathology; any field of study involving plants
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Any graduating senior from Lyons Senior High School
  • A graduating senior living in the greater Lyons area (80540 zip code) attending a different high school
  • Homeschoolers may apply.
Restrictions: To be used for enrollment at an accredited two-year or four-year college / university, or trade school. 
Amount: One (1) $1,500 scholarship
Payable: Directly to the education institution in one lump sum
